Job Summary Title: PUBLIC HEALTH NURSE State Role Title: Registered Nurse I Pay Band: 4 ($65,958 – $73,197.50) Agency: Virginia Department of Health Location: PORTSMOUTH - TW Recruitment Type: General Public – G Responsibilities Provide independent professional nursing care to patients in clinics, homes, schools, and other community or congregate care settings. Perform nursing assessments, lab tests, measurements, and develop and implement care plans, including the administration of medication and case management. Participate in public health emergencies and community health assessments. Supervise support staff as needed. Maintain documentation of immunization or evidence of immunity to hepatitis B, measles, mumps, rubella, varicella, Tdap (or Td every 10 years), and current seasonal influenza vaccination. Minimum Qualifications Registered Nurse license by state code (RN). Excellent verbal and written communication; ability to analyze problems, develop solutions, and establish priorities. Skills in physical examination, health assessment, interviewing, and counseling techniques. Ability to function independently, prioritize and organize work, solve problems, adapt to change, work as a team member and interact with the public. Knowledge of public health concepts, principles of public health nursing, epidemiology, immunizations, basic nursing science, medical terminology, and case management. Must be certified in Basic Life Support (BLS)/CPR. May be required to travel and to work weekend and/or evening hours. Additional Considerations Additional study in health promotion or public health preferred. BSN degree preferred.
